At Waking Up To Autism we are passionate about Creating Awareness and Promoting Acceptance of Autism.

With gaps in both societies, and the Education systems, knowledge and understanding of Autism, it makes for a very challenging world for people on the spectrum.

This is applicable to both children and adults.

A crucial way to try and bridge these gaps is to start young.

So we have put together an innovative framework of training and assistance.

We are taking this into schools so that we can help assist teachers and school staff with their approach and support when they have an Autistic child in their classroom.

Because as we know, Knowledge is Power.

Which is why we pack our training with rich content that ensures staff are fully aware of what Autism is, how it can present, why certain behaviors may be seen, how they can support the child, as well as quick and easy interventions to help identify triggers and to reduce meltdowns.

And we cannot overlook the ripple effect that this will have.

When teachers are better equipped with the knowledge they need, we have found, they feel far more confident in helping to support the Autistic children in their class.

This then results in a more harmonious environment, which inevitably every child in the class will benefit from.

To give you an idea of what training sessions could be included;

  • “The Truth about Autism – What it is and what it is not!” (Including Myth Busting)
  • “Looking at the child not the label” – learning how to embrace a child’s individual profile
  • “The Bigger Picture” – Learning about the co-existing conditions SPD, PDA, ADHD, Dyspraxia
  • “Here come the Girls!” – Specific training about Autism in girls and their unique presentation. Looking at “Masking” and how to identify it.
  • “Catching a Meltdown” – how to identify the warning signs, looking at our approach and how to support a child through a meltdown.
  • “Learning & Communication Styles” – learning to respect and understand the differences as well as embracing stimming behavior and realizing its importance.
  • “The Teacher Tool Kit” – advice and guidance of things teacher can have on hand to help aid them to support Autistic children.
  • “The Parent/Carer Relationship” – Guidance on forming a healthy and beneficial relationship with the parent/carer

As we have stated, our training will ensure that teachers feel much more confident in their ability to help and support the child.

Due to the nature of the topics we can easily accommodate training in a variety of ways depending on your schools specific requirements and needs.

We would be happy to provide a full staff training session as part of an INSET Day or After School training program. We can also provide smaller, more targeted training to a specific teacher group.

So……….

Why Book This Course?

This course is unique as it delivers information and support from a place of experience.

Claire is trained in Autism Awareness but she also holds the undoubtable advantage of,

‘Walking the walk.’

As a mother to two Autistic children, Claire has been successful in securing suitable educational provisions for both of them.

She has done this by working very closely with schools and staff to ensure that her children have been given the best support to thrive.

This insider’s view is priceless for other schools. They will see both sides of the situation, this in turn ensures that their support and approach is both beneficial and sustainable.

What will you be able to do after this training?

Staff will be more aware of what Autism is and how it presents. They will feel more confident in their abilities to know how to approach and support individual pupils which will result in a more successful teacher/pupil relationship.

Attendees will leave the course with a greater knowledge bank that they will be able to implement immediately into the classroom, making this training transformational for a school as a whole.

Who would benefit from this training?

ALL STAFF. Teachers and TA’s will undoubtedly gain huge benefits for day to day life in the classroom but as we know, Autism doesn’t turn on and off, and therefore ALL staff who come into contact with children during the school day would benefit from this training course.

This means it is an incredible investment for a school to make – providing their entire workforce with the education and support that they need in order to make the environment as inclusive as possible.

ALL CHILDREN. Not just Autistic pupils will benefit from their school engaging with this programme. The information and support provided in the course will benefit you all.

It is also important to note that when staff have completed this training and they are implementing changes in the classroom the positive outcome for the Autistic pupil will be felt by the class as a whole.

FAMILIES. When children are happier at school it makes for a better experience for both the child and their families. And so this training will not just touch on the school setting but will ripple into home life as well. It will also serve to create a successful and healthy school/parent relationship.

After the session……..

The Waking Up To Autism School Training Programme is CPD Accredited, meaning that all attendees will receive a certificate of completion. This is a great addition to ongoing professional development and can be recorded within a career record. It is also a wonderful achievement as a school to be able to showcase that your staff have engaged with this level of training.

Schools who have completed a training course will be able to use the Waking Up To Autism Award logo on their website/letterheads etc.

Even though the training session is done in a day, the effects of the session will continue for a long time afterwards.

The change begins instantly, after the session staff will take what they have learnt and can begin to implement it.

But, the REAL change will be ongoing long after Claire has left when what has been learnt becomes second nature.

What is the investment?

This course truly is an incredible investment in three key areas, your Pupils, your staff, and the parents and families of the pupils you strive to help every day.

There is no cap on how many staff members can attend – the more the merrier!!
